Description:

This document contains information on the maximum practicable length of PoE cable for supplying power to LANCOM indoor and outdoor access points.

Scenario:

Local conditions force you to use the maximum possible length of PoE cable to supply power to an access point.

Answer:

All LANCOM access points can optionally be powered via PoE (Power over Ethernet). This requires the use of a PoE Injector, which is supplied with some devices or must otherwise be purchased separately. Information on this is available from the data sheet for the relevant LANCOM access point.

Concerning the access points LANCOM OAP-54 Wireless, respectively LANCOM OAP-310agn: a maximum distance of 60 m in between access point, power over ethernet injector and switch must not be exceeded.

A LANCOM OAP-54-1, LANCOM OAP-321/322 or LANCOM OAP-821/822/830 does not have any heating or cooling equipment, and can therefore—like the indoor access points—be supplied with power over a cable length of up to 100m. This corresponds to the maximum cable length permitted by the Ethernet standard.

In general you should ensure that you use a quality of cable corresponding at least to Cat 5. The cable must provide contact via all four wire pairs.

To this end, the 15m PoE cable with a waterproof threaded connector as supplied with the LANCOM OAP Wireless can simply be extended with a coupler.

An Ethernet cable coupler and Cat 5 Ethernet cable are available from specialist resellers.
