Description:

The precise alignment of the antennas is of considerable importance in establishing a P2P path. The more central the receiving antenna is located in the "ideal line" of the transmitting antenna, the higher is the actual power and the effective bandwidth. If the receiving antenna is outside of this ideal area, however, significant losses in performance will be the result.

This articles describes, how the antennas of access points with LCOS LX (or the access points themselves with integrated antennas) can be aligned by means of the LANmonitor.

Requirements:

The option Point-to-Point is only shown in the LANmonitor, if an additional WLAN is broadcast by the access point. In this contect it is sufficient, that a WLAN is configured temporarily to perform the antenna alignment. The separate WLAN is not needed for the P2P operation.

Procedure:

1) Open one of the access points in the LANmonitor and open the section Point-to-Point for the WLAN interface used for the P2P connection (in this example WLAN-3). This section shows status information for the P2P connection (e,g, the Rx signal strength).

2) Perform a rightclick on the section Point-to-Point, to open the context menu.

Open the context menu for the Point-to-Point section in LANmonitor

3) Select the option Adjusting Point-to-Point WLAN Antennas in the context menu.

Open the menu Adjusting Point-to-Point WLAN Antennas in the context menu

4) Activate all boxes of the Check List and click Start.

Tick of the checklist and start measuring the Rx signal strength for the P2P connection

5) After starting the measurement, the wizard shows the absolute values for the current signal strength and the maximum value since session start. In addition, the time progression is displayed in a diagram with the maximum value.
